Here are all the box office records 'Star Wars' hasn't broken

o start (but certainly not to end), the movie is just shy of topping the list of the U.S.'s highest-grossing films ever. For now, the number one spot still belongs to James Cameron's Avatar — but expect that to change quickly in the coming days.

Keep in mind also that these numbers haven't been adjusted for inflation. When they are, Gone with the Wind still reigns as the highest-grossing movie ever domestically — followed by the original Star Wars.

Highest-grossing film — global

Avatar also dominates internationally as the globe's highest grossing film ever. The Force Awakens is currently sixth on that list, but it's rapidly closing in on the films directly above it,Furious 7 and The Avengers.

Best opening weekend — foreign

Though Star Wars had the box office's biggest domestic and international openings, the best foreign opening (meaning in all countries excluding the U.S.) still belongs to Jurassic World — and that's one record it's too late to break.

Other weekends

Highest gross — winter

The Force Awakens was fall 2015's top movie — impressive, considering its debut late in that season. Winter, however, remains unconquered by Star Wars — for now.

Highest-grossing movie on a Wednesday, Thursday, or Saturday

But all the other days are covered by The Force Awakens.

Highest-gross for a non-opening Thursday

Obscure, but noteworthy because the current record holder is Transformers 2. Go see movies on Thursdays, people.

Most weeks at number 1

E.T. spent 16 weeks total at the top of the box office in 1982, while Titanic spent 15 weeks there consecutively in 1997 and 1998. E.T. also spent more weeks than any other movie among the box office's top 5 and top 10 highest-grossing films. Can Star Wars swoop in to take this title as well?
